Vivien Jones 1951-2010 – Lacrosse legend – Obituary
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011Vivien Jones 1951-2010 – Lacrosse legend
Vivien Jones, who died on Boxing Day (26.12.2010), was a legend of women’s lacrosse. Although typically a little uncomfortable with that accolade herself, she stands out among today’s overblown and overpaid sporting icons as genuinely deserving this honour, bestowed by her sport in 1999. Not just deserving for her extraordinary playing career but also for her passion and commitment to her sport and her ability to forge long-standing friendships with team-mates and opponents alike.
She amassed 108 caps – 97 for Wales, 9 for the Celts (Wales & Scotland) and 2 for Great Britain – a total recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as a world record for lacrosse. Her international career, which spanned over 25 years, took her from her mid-twenties into her fifties. She played for Wales in six IFWLA World Cups between 1982 and 2001 and was player-coach in three of them.
She was instantly recognisable, having white hair from a relatively early age, which belied her tremendous physical stamina in this most aerobic of sports. Always wearing the number 13 shirt, she was also technically and tactically adept and led by example with her ‘never give up’ attitude.
Born Vivien Webb in Glasgow in 1951 (21.6.1951), she moved to the London area at an early age, with her parents and three sisters. She attended The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton after passing the entrance examinations and learnt to play lacrosse there in the sixties.
Her playing career ran for five decades, only curtailed recently by secondary breast cancer. She even returned to the lacrosse field in spite of her initial surgery and extensive radio and chemotherapy in the early 2000s, as well as continuing to coach and select at school, territorial and international level until last year.
She represented Middlesex and South at junior level and took her international bow in 1977 for Wales after marrying Graham Jones and following the birth of her two daughters – Sara and Nicola – in the early seventies. Although qualified for all three home nations, she opted to play for her husband’s country of birth when Scotland’s selectors inexplicably overlooked her talents on the basis that she might be too old! She quickly absorbed her adopted country’s culture and traditions and the rest, as they say, is history.
Vivien continued to play at club level for Putney and Centaurs and to represent Middlesex, South and Wales up to and beyond the millennium. Perhaps her greatest achievements were in helping Wales to win the home international championship in 1994 and being player-coach in 1997, when they rose to their highest-ever world ranking of 4th in that year’s World Cup in Japan. However, some of her proudest moments were when playing for Wales alongside her daughter Sara in the late nineties.
Outside playing and coaching, Vivien took on numerous administrative roles at club, county, territorial and international level. She was a dedicated coach and mentor to many younger players as they progressed through the representative ranks. Her collective achievements in and contribution to lacrosse were recognised by the sport, in front of her peers, at the U19 World Championships in Perth, Australia in 1999 and at the 2009 World Cup in Prague.
Alongside her amateur sporting career, she completed a teaching degree at St Mary’s College and taught in schools around south west London before returning to The Lady Eleanor Holles School as a member of staff. She then worked for fifteen years at British Airways in increasingly senior roles in Customer Services, Training and Human Resources. She left there to work for RHM in 2005 and as a freelance training and personnel development consultant since 2007, when her returning illness and treatment allowed.
Vivien was a greatly admired team-mate, colleague, leader and opponent. She was hugely competitive on the pitch but became firm friends with many opposition players and tributes have flowed in from across the lacrosse world including Australia, Canada and the US. Most commonly described as inspirational and amazing, she brought all her renowned courage, strength of character, positivity, good grace, dignity and sense of humour to bear in her battle with breast cancer.
Former Wales team-mate and coach, Jane Rowlands summed up her contribution, in a recent submission supporting her nomination for a national award, by saying that, “Vivien has been a role model and mentor to women in sport in general as well as many lacrosse players on and off the field. Her strong interpersonal skills, being non-judgmental, loyal, approachable and willing to be involved has enabled her to profoundly influence players of all ages. Vivien was a highly regarded, dynamic and innovative leader. Lacrosse has been the winner in having enjoyed and benefited from the service of one so dedicated, committed and inspirational.”
Fiona Clark, Immediate Past President of the IFWLA and current Australian Lacrosse Association President added, “Our sport was indeed fortunate to have Vivien in our midst and to have experienced her professionalism, her ability to impart knowledge and her leadership over the years. Vivien has contributed much to the game of Women’s Lacrosse and her value cannot be measured – only honoured.”
She is survived by her two daughters, former-husband Graham and recent partner John Scott.

Lacrosse Scotland send their condolences to Vivien’s family. She will be sadly missed in the Lacrosse world.

Message from Jane Claydon, the President of Lacrosse Scotland
Thursday, October 29th, 2009Welcome to the new season.
I am writing to give you some news about what is going on in Lacrosse Scotland at the moment.
Leagues/ Clubs
The mixed league is now underway with Edinburgh Thistle narrowly beating St Andrew’s University 10-9 in the first match of the season. The first face off of the men’s league will take place shortly between Edinburgh City and Glasgow University in what is sure to be a hotly contested match. Keep a look out for the first league tables being published at the end of November once all teams should have at least one league match under their belts.
The Scottish Mixed Universities Tournament took place on 18th October. Edinburgh University won the tournament with the runners up being St Andrews. Thanks must go to Glasgow University who organised the event.
Rules and Umpiring
Lorna Powell organised a most successful training day for umpires in early October. It was very well attended.
Strategic Plan
I mentioned in the summer that sportscotland require Lacrosse Scotland to under take an audit. This is becoming an increasingly professional task and Sports Scotland is now employing consultants, to help National Governing Bodies undertake this task. Bruce Crawford has been appointed this week as the consultant for Lacrosse Scotland.
The Lacrosse Scotland Board has had three meetings with Calum Wood, our sportscotland Liaison Officer and board members met with Bruce Crawford towards the end of September. Bruce now plans to talk to some groups of the Lacrosse Scotland membership and will start with the Women’s/U19 Squads on 24th October. On 31st October Bertie Salmi will facilitate a similar session with those involved on the League day.
Following on from this, a questionnaire will be prepared and all members of Lacrosse Scotland will be able to express their views. Topics are likely to include Governance, Clubs, League, Subscriptions, Finance, Development, Rules and Umpiring, Volunteers and Coaches, Performance Squads, Fund Raising and Child Protection. Once the information is reviewed it will be consolidated into a report for the working group. The next stage is to draft a strategy, put in place an action plan, a financial plan and finally produce the document.
Dates for your diaries
In April 2010 Scotland will host the Women’s Home Internationals. Further details will be circulated in due course.
In July 2010 the Men’s World Cup will be taking place in Manchester. Further details about the event can be found on the Men’s World Cup website.

New Season info for Women’s Teams
Saturday, August 29th, 2009Below is an e-mail from Martha Cornbrooks which was sent to anyone subscribed to the players group e-mail address. See below for info on how to get on this mailing list.
Dear all,
The 2009-2010 season is upon us. If you are interested in playing for the Scotland National Team, there is a lot to look forward to this season and over the next 4 years as we are already looking ahead to 2013.
This year we are concentrating on promoting links with the U21 and U19 national squads. The U21s will have their own coach but will be training with the Senior Squad on the same weekends and at the same venue. The U19s will be building up to their World Championships in 2011 and as a Senior Squad we are looking to support their campaign in every way possible.
A full outlook on the build up to 2013 will be presented on the training weekend of 26/27 September. I hope you can join us!
Feel free to organize your transport to Edinburgh for the 26 & 27 today and please see the provisional dates for 2009-2010 which you can download by clicking HERE.
If you would like to hear more about upcoming women’s lacrosse info for Scotland, please e-mail playersgp@googlemail.com and ask to be added to the mailing list.
Best wishes-
Martha

Message from Jane Claydon: Insurance and Board positions
Thursday, August 6th, 2009INSURANCE
At the AGM in May 2009 I said that Lacrosse Scotland urgently needed someone, with a background in insurance, to take on the responsibility of making sure that appropriate insurance is in place for members of Lacrosse Scotland.
To date no one has offered to take on this role. Being responsible for the insurance for members of Lacrosse Scotland would not be a Lacrosse Scotland Board role, it would not necessitate attending meetings and I do not think it would take up a huge amount of anyone’s time, if the person concerned had the necessary background in insurance. It is a specialised subject. I trained as a teacher, other people on the Lacrosse Scotland Board have quite different training and other experience but none of us is an expert in insurance.
If your work is in insurance or if you have a friend/husband/wife/partner etc. who works in the insurance business we really do need your/their help. It is an important aspect of Lacrosse Scotland but at present there is apparently no one within the organisation who is able to make sure that we are providing the best possible cover for our members. Cover is in place but we urgently need someone who can use their expertise to make sure we are doing the very best we can for the members of Lacrosse Scotland.
VACANT BOARD POSITIONS
May I bring to your attention that Lacrosse Scotland is still without a Secretary and a Women’s Umpiring Representative? These posts have been vacant since the AGM in May. We cannot run an efficient organisation without these key positions being filled. At present I am doing the jobs of both President, Child Protection Officer and Secretary, which is far from ideal and not what I agreed to do when I stood for office as President in May 2008.
If you want Lacrosse Scotland to be in a position to flourish and be able to take lacrosse in Scotland forward please consider volunteering for one of these three important roles:
i/c Insurance for Lacrosse Scotland
Lacrosse Scotland Secretary
Lacrosse Scotland Women’s Rules and Umpiring Representative.
The role of Secretary might interest some one who has just left University and has, as yet, been unable to obtain a job or someone who has been made redundant and wishes to undertake some volunteer work for a National Governing Body to enhance their CV.
If these roles are not filled for the coming year my personal opinion is that Lacrosse Scotland may eventually cease to exist and if that were to be the case it would no longer be possible for players to participate in World Cups at any level, as there has to be a National Governing Body in place, overseeing both men and women, to enable national teams to enter a World Cup.
I think it important that all members of Lacrosse Scotland understand the importance of having a Board in place which can operate effectively and efficiently, rather than having existing committee members being forced into a situation where by they have to double/triple up roles and responsibilities.
Please let me know if you are willing to help in anyway.

World Championships, Manchester, 2010 Ancient Clans & England Lions Golf day
Tuesday, July 21st, 2009In an effort to reduce the cost to individual players and staff, England Lions and Ancient Clans (Scotland Masters) are organising a joint golf day to raise funds.
The provisional date for the day is set for Monday 5th July 2010 (subject to change). The date has been chosen to allow players, staff, and supporters from overseas teams a chance, should they be arriving early for the Worlds, to join us for the day’s events.
To be held at the Marriott Worsley Park Championships golf course, Manchester.
Playing to the Stapleford scoring system to enable players of all standards to have a chance to compete for a prize placing. A handicap certificate is not required for this event, although a reasonable standard of play and etiquette will be expected from competitors. An expected 80 plus players on the day means Tee times will be scheduled throughout the day. Lacrosse Scotland seeks board members.
Monday, July 20th, 2009As I mentioned at the AGM, Lacrosse Scotland will be shortly undergoing a process of discussion and consultation to develop a Strategic Plan for the next decade. If any members of Lacrosse Scotland would like to be involved in this could they please let me know. There will be a series of meetings arranged in October and November 2009 to discuss issues and I am keen to involve not just LS Board members but other LS members who maybe interested in participating in this process. If sufficient people are interested it may be the case that small groups of people work together on one particular aspect and report back to the main group. This means that members based in the south may still be able to make a valuable contribution. Please register your interest with me by 17th September 2009.
Lacrosse Scotland urgently needs to fill the posts of Secretary and Women’s Rules and Umpiring Chair. Both roles are key positions on the LS Board and might appeal to someone who wishes to extend their work experience within the framework of a National Governing Body. After being at the Women’s World Cup in Prague I am very aware that Scotland is one of the very few countries in Pool A who have to rely entirely on volunteer help. Many other successful countries have large numbers of administrative staff to help them run their organisations. Unfortunately our resources do not extend to this.
If you feel you can help please let me know as soon as possible. We cannot run an efficient Board without a Secretary and I am sure you would agree that umpires are rather crucial to the game!

How to keep up to the minute with the latest World Cup excitements
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009Hello kind supporters,
So many of you are making the the trip out to Prague to support us and we couldn’t be more grateful. You’re going to see some incredible lacrosse and we are so excited about the numbers of supporters we’re anticipating to have on the sideline for some of our most important matches. Thank you so much!
However, of course there are many more people who can’t get away from work/school/uni or can’t afford the trip over. Not wanting you to miss out on anything, we’ve just set up a Lacrosse Scotland twitter account.
Twitter is pretty new, but I’m sure most of you will know what it’s about. However, for those that don’t or won’t, we’ve managed to make it really simple. We’re twittering, but all our tweets are going to be displayed right here on LacrosseScotland.com over on the left hand side of the homepage.
So, when you’re bored at work, or slightly frustrated with your friends in the squad who’ve been too busy to text or e-mail to keep you updated, then come and visit this site and you’ll be able to find out exactly what they’re up to, minute by minute, with pictures too!

Enjoy!
Watch the Lacrosse World Cup’s Live Footage Online
